Over the past 10 years, Apple has generally adhered to devices that are predictable and safe, avoiding major new launches or radical changes that may not be rock-solid reliable. Nevertheless, rivals in the industry sometimes push Apple out of its comfort zone, especially when shareholders demand similar innovations.
IPhone and iPad Excel by their respective tasks in their classic record form factors. But times are changing, and Apple is reportedly working on a number of folding models with the first models, an 8-inch iPhone and a massive 19-inch iPad due to arrival as early as next year. While it may seem exciting to imagine what a collapsible iPhone or iPad can look like, it’s the last thing Apple needs.
Paying more for less
Before Apple launches its first collapsible devices, the iPhone 17 Air could give us a glimpse of the general folding formula later this year. Apple is assumed to work on the iPhone 17 air to experiment with slim devices as a foldable iPhone or iPad should be noticeably thin when opened to maintain Apple’s slim shape when folded.
However, the new air model was rumored to cost at least $ 100 more than the regular iPhone 17 despite being less capable of. To achieve its unusually slim design, Apple is reported to exclude flagship ship, including an ultrawide rear lens, a physical SIM card castle in international markets, a pro -chip, stereo speakers, some battery capacity and other features. So you pay essentially more for a newer midrange design design.
A recent report specifies some of the folding iPhone’s similar disadvantages. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that next year’s 7.8-inch coincidental iPhone will cost at least $ 2,000 and possibly even cross the $ 2,500 brand. Along with the above compromises, some of which are likely to get their way into a folding phone, KUO notes that the phone will offer a touch -id sensor -a significant downward adjustment from Face ID. So you will give up a lot just to get a little more screen.
If you can get an iPhone with an iPad for less than the price of a folding phone, what is the poenget.

A flipping floppy
Now some may claim that a folded iPhone is worth the higher price. Maybe you’ve seen Samsung Z Flip and Z Fold Devices and feel like you’re missing out on. And yes, they are cool and fun for the first few days, but after using one for a while, I did not find that they addressed any existing smartphone errors or served some meaningful purpose. The concept is cool, but unless Apple can find out some killer app, I think a folded iPhone should remain a prototype.
E.g. Offers Z Flip’s Clamshell Factor Two Main Benefits: A More Powerful Size and Remote Shooting. Even the largest iPhone 16 Pro Max already fits in most pockets, and you can use it for hands-free photography using Apple Watch’s built-in camera remote and a basic dock. So a collapsible iPhone would only do what iPhone can already do in another way.

Samsung Z Flip looks cool, but the collapsible screen is a party trick.

Z Fold’s design is not worth it in the same way, as the Pro Max iPhone display is sufficiently immersive to on-the-go view for most users. It’s not to mention that buying an iPhone and iPad separately would be a CheaperMore durable investments. And besides, most people use their Apple devices exchange when one of them charges, updates or out of reach, so two are better than one.
Meanwhile, the folding iPad will reportedly run a new operating system, possibly even a touch -enabled version of macOS. This is something Apple fans have wanted forever, but apparently there are no technological limitations that prevent Apple from bringing macos to iPad Right now. And if there is, a hinge will not fix them.
The iPad Pro is already packing a large screen, the skilled M4 MAC chip, and offers a MacBook-like keyboard fortress, so making it folder does not serve any legitimate productivity purpose over a tablet other than portability. A mighty us would be great, but if it is limited to the high price folding phone, it would basically make iPad irrelevant.
See the next one -gate unfold
If you are still not convinced now, you may also consider the durability of these devices. Virtually every fold in the market develops a form of curl over time. While a report claims that Apple is working to find out, the form factor will undoubtedly introduce new challenges. Given the sensitivity of these devices, it is definitely dozens or hundreds of times a day to bend them repeatedly dozens or hundreds of times a day.
Do you remember Apple’s Magsafe Duo Charger? It was nothing nearby as technologically complex as a folding phone, and it collapsed after about 200 folds. It did not quite rise to the level of antenna or Bendgate, but a folded iPhone with a busted hinge would definitely. Even with strict tests, what does the internal components guarantee beyond the display itself do not wear out when users are repeatedly folded and unfolding their iPhones or iPads? It is a problem you do not have with the current range of devices.

The Magsafe -duo’s hinge did not hold up exactly to carry and tear.

Don’t fold under pressure, apple
Due to pressure from shareholders and competitors, Apple Intelligence was revealed during last year’s WWDC. Almost a year later, the project remains indefinitely delayed and the next gene Siri may be delayed for at least a year. Had it not been for the aforementioned catalysts, I am sure that the company would not have announced these AI features before this year’s DUB or even the one that follows.
Apple should learn from Apple Intelligence Mishap to stick to its mission and avoid external influence. Android phone brands have long experimented with all kinds of crazy gimmicks, and most of them eventually die out. As much as some companies hope that foldable will be the next smartphone development, the statistics simply show otherwise.
Mainstream foldable has been around for half a decade, but still has only approx. 1 percent of users adopted them. They are generally overpriced and full of shortcomings, and most importantly they fail to raise the smartphone experience. Apple should know better.
