Patrick Johnston shares the meaningful reason why Kendall and Kylie Jenner hugs pots in his ceramic study

Play with clay! Kendall and Kylie JennerAt Seth RogenAt Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Hailey Bieber have flowed to Patrick Johnston’s Temple of Mediclaytion Ceramics Studio In Venice, California, and there is a special reason.

The artist, who has become known for his signature, hugged and beloved vases, sat down with one to share why A-lists can’t get enough of his one-on-one-stroke collection.

“When I was 12 years old, I was finally eligible to take a wheel toss class and have not stopped since … I learned early on that imagination and motivation are the keys to success in pottery,” he explains.

In addition to using ceramics as a marketing market to ‘shoot up’ his creativity, Johnston also appreciates the bond that the activity forms between people.

“I love where regardless of social status or background, my ceramic study levels the rules of the game and everyone are welcome,” he says.

As for how he achieves this: “Our model is to create a space where no one wants to leave.… Every class is a potluck. We eat together and clay together, and those who laugh together stay together. Everyone in the classes becomes friends. It is a true society.”

The California natives also maintain a relaxed approach when it comes to his teaching style, whether you are a celebrity client or not.

“I give my students room to make mistakes and actually learn. … I let everyone make a mess and feel normal and free to have fun with clay. … We don’t care how famous you are, and Clay doesn’t care if you’re famous,” he notes.

But celebrities are certainly interested in the clay, and they show it with physical touch thanks to Johnston’s original hug a pot experience he created because of his own boom.

“After graduation from Rhode Island School of Design in 2004, I worked on a piece and embraced it accidentally, but I stepped away and thought it was quite breathtakingly beautiful,” he shares.

From there, the pottery expert wanted to catch the same innocence in all his work – and give others the opportunity to do the same.
