Thousands participate in Stand Up for Science Rallies throughout the United States

Thousands of people in cities all over the United States protected Trump administration’s cuts for scientific funding on March 7.

In New York City, more than a thousand people gathered in Washington Square Park and changed, “Fund Science Not War!” People wore signs to support science and degradation of the cuts, included someone who read, “Science makes America great.”

The protest was one of at least 30 “stand up for science” quantities in cities across the United States, with more than 150 events expected worldwide. Researchers also went out of laboratories as part of the protest.

Sales President Donald Trump’s inauguration On January 20, the administration has canceled or frozen billions of dollars federal funding for scientific and medical research. Many of the cuts have focused on research related to diversity, justice and inclusion (DEI) as well as research into climate change and gender. The administration has also fired thousands of federal employed by the US scientific agencies, included by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Institute of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“Science is being attacked and funding is cut in a way that will affect our country’s well -being now and for many decades,” says Maia, a post -doctoral researcher in cardiology at Columbia University in New York that gave her first for fear of withdrawal. She says she and her colleagues have lost funding for their research.

The big rally took place in Washington DC, where thousands of people wait. Speakers who included Bill New The Science Guy; Francis Collins, train director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH); and more members of Congress. More than 1500 people are waiting for the New York event, where the prominent scientists also spoke, Harvard included theoretical physicist Lisa Randall, chief scientist at Meta Ai Yann Lecun and Harold Varmus, to educate NIH director and Nobel Priszewinner.

Scientists from all over the world are waiting for the New York Protest. “America was very unusual for science. We really think science made America great. Now we are very disappointed because Everhything will be destroyed, ”says a French cancer biologist who asked to remain anonymous.

Several of those we admitted that they may need to leave the United States to continue their work. “I’m the heart bridge. I thought I’d do this to my home and do my science here, ”says Vivinetteo, who is from Argentina.

Dennis Robbins, a science education at Hunter College in New York, wore a sign that read, “Now I’m a mad scientist.” He says he had sales signs in the first “march for science” protest in 2017. “It’s great that we still have to gather for science that someone has to speak for its meaningful in a democracy,” he says.
